95. Baird Bay - Streaky Bay

BAIRD SEA LIONS

This has to be one of the greatest things you can experience. To swim with these guys is something you really have to try. They, (the sea lions) do not like you to try & pat them on the head, however if you keep your hands to yourself they will come right up to your face &  almost kiss you. It is a little freaky at first particularly after you notice that they have canine like teeth that would lacerate your face to shreds. They never take their eyes off  you & I suppose this is a protective mechanism they have learnt to prevent attack from the Great White. The more you dive & act like a sea lion the more interactive they become. From the bull male, to the mums to the pups, they are the most fabulous creatures. You could play & dive with them forever & never tire of it. The boys had a great experience, but Kaz was the one whom after her anxious night, found it the most fulfilling. Good on ya Kaz.

BAIRD GRAZING

The whole district is sheep grazing. We came across this old timer mustering his flock along one of the back roads. So that we could pass along he had his dog take off , scale the fence to the left then come up in front of the mob & hold them together until we passed. It is always a pleasure to watch man & beast work together in this way.

STREAKY BAY

Streaky has a reputation for Great Whites & from this replica you can see why. A 21 year old caught this monster (1520kgs) on a 24 kg line. It was deemed a world record. Think about it; if the average male is say 80kgs, this fish is 19 times that bodyweight. You can see that there are teeth marks below the dorsal fin. The marks are the result of a little peck on the cheek whilst lovemaking. That’s one hell of a hicky!
